Schlumberger & Prospect - Empowering Veterans Through Employment
On November 14th, Prospect and Schlumberger collaborated to deliver the Effective Strategy Session called Empowering Veterans Through Employment at the Marriott in downtown Calgary. The event was well attended by several of Prospect’s employer partners and featured two panels of speakers. The first panel was comprised of leaders from BMO, Nutrien, Katerra, CP Rail, Chevron and Schlumberger, who discussed best practices for including candidates with military experience in the workforce. The second panel included Canadian, American and British Veterans, who talked about their experience transitioning from military service to the civilian workforce.

Prospect was excited to be part of the Canadian Legacy Project’s presentation of Penn & Teller at a fundraising event in Calgary, October 20th. We called attention to veterans’ homelessness and employment issues with a special poster, “There are some things even Penn & Teller can’t make disappear.” Both Penn & Teller signed the poster after a great show that was enjoyed by many, especially 400 veterans and their families who were hosted by the Canadian Legacy Project.
“Canadian Legacy Project is dedicated to supporting our Canadian veterans and this annual concert event is one of our main fundraising activities,” stated David Howard, President of the Canadian Legacy Project.
Prospect’s Forces@WORK initiative was featured at the event and is the employment partner of the Canadian Legacy Project.
Prospect and the Canada Legacy Project (CLP) continue their collaboration to support Veterans.
CLP is leading a Veterans Funding Drive to raise $500,000 over the next year to support various Veterans Initiatives. This year, they switched their emphasis to supporting employment and education initiatives, housing and service dogs. Prospect’s Forces@WORK has been identified as a leading program that CLP will continue to support.

Calgary military charity switches focus from food to jobs for veterans
The Canadian Legacy Project started the Veterans Food Drive in support of the Veterans Food Bank at the Calgary Poppy fund over a decade ago.
But on Saturday, the group announced that they will be changing their focus this year from collecting food to supporting programs that help veterans with employment, housing, mental health and PTSD service dogs.

”We anticipate the Veterans Food Bank at the Calgary Poppy Bank will have the resources needed to help the veteran population they support. With this goal soon to be accomplished, Canadian Legacy Project will not be further promoting this year’s food drive and is asking Calgarians to support their 2017 Veterans Funding Drive,” Canadian Legacy Project president Dave Howard said in a news release.
“We have been overwhelmed with support for Canadian Legacy Projects Veterans Food Drive. We are confident that we will have excess food donations this year and have partnered with the Mustard Seed to make sure they receive food donations also as they are feeding our homeless veterans daily,” Howard said.
“We will monitor the situation at the Calgary Poppy Funds Veterans Food Bank through the remainder of this year and next, to make sure if the food bank needs are met.”
Melanie Mitra works with the Alberta non-profit group Prospect Human Services which runs an employment service for veterans called Forces@WORK.
Forces@WORK connects people retiring from military service with employers who want to tap into that demographic.
“They were stunned to learn that here was this very skilled, capable population with all skill levels that were struggling with employment,” Mitra said.
She said ending a military career is a tough transition for many former soldiers.
“They are facing a major cultural change. They are facing a huge career change. Many of them have never even been in the civilian workforce as they joined at 18. But on top of that they’re dealing with an injury that has prematurely ended their military career,” Mitra said.
According to Howard in 2016 Calgarians helped raise over $170,000 in cash donations through the Canadian Legacy Project’s Veterans Food Drive, which was used to buy food gift cards and filled four warehouses with food for the Veterans Food Bank which is run by the Calgary Poppy Fund.
“While our food drive goal has been met, it is important to note that this is a trying time for many of our Canadian veterans. They are having a difficult time integrating back into civilian life. Many are unemployed and many are suffering with PTSD. Canadian Legacy Project is a charity run by volunteers and we want to ensure people who support this funding drive that their dollars will be going directly to those in need,” Howard stated.

The 2017 Prospect Stampede BBQ was a success – thank you to our sponsors!
On July 5th, Prospect’s Stampede BBQ drew an enthusiastic crowd to over 1,200 attendees. After last year’s sudden downpour, this year’s BBQ brought sun, clear skies and excitement. Activities at the BBQ included an inflatable climbing wall, bouncy house, jousting, beef-on-a-bun, mini-donuts, face-painting, and great music. The BBQ was emcee’d by Prospect’s own Lindsay Hextall, Director of Employer Services.

One of the features of this year’s BBQ included the Great Canadian Armed Forces Burger Challenge – a competition to find out who makes the best burger in the Canadian Armed Forces. Prospect invited five of the top military chefs from the Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Canadian Navy, and the British Army in Suffield. The Burger Challenge was generously sponsored by CP Rail, TransCanada and The Canadian Legacy Project.
The competition was designed to help bring awareness to Prospect’s Forces@WORK program – an employment initiative funded by the Government of Alberta that helps veterans and transitioning members of the Canadian Armed Forces, particularly the ill and injured, find good civilian jobs. Since the program was created it has helped more than 800 veterans and their families.
The five military teams participating in the competition were Warrant Officer Bryan Power (returning champion from last year) and Private Christopher Chow from the 3rd Canadian Division, Master Corporal Jordan Reid and Warrant Officer Simon Tsang from the 3rd Canadian Division, Petty Officer 2nd Class Dana Haley and Corporal Nada Bounmey from the HMCS Calgary, Petty Officer 2nd Class Dominic Jackson and Corporal Miguel Alarcon from the CFB Comox, and Corporal Christopher Walne and Corporal Steven Hocking from the British Army Training Unit in Suffield.
Each team was given 15 minutes to plate their burgers for a panel of celebrity judges. The judges were food critic John Gilchrist, celebrity chefs Vikram Vij and Michael Noble, the Hon. Joe Ceci, Alberta’s Minister of Finance, and the Hon. Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs Canada.
CBC’s Angela Knight emcee’d the competition, keeping the momentum going with the crowd, playing games with the judges and offering great insight into the event sponsors, the judges and the Canadian Armed Forces. The competition was fierce, but the teams showed great esprit de corps, often helping one another and keeping their strict timelines in check.
The five teams used creative and delicious ingredients to wow the judges, including Elk, maple bacon, old white cheddar, maple BBQ sauce, beef steak tomatoes, kidney beans, Alberta Black Angus beef, and french fried onions. Their burgers were judged on taste, presentation, creativity, and their pitch to the judges.
The winning team was from the Air Force, Petty Officer 2nd Class Dominic Jackson and Corporal Miguel Alarcon from the CFB Comox. They received the Spatula d’Or (golden spatula) trophy for their winning creation of an Elk, beef and bacon patty topped with maple candied back bacon, double smoked cheddar, buttermilk onion rings, Stout BBQ sauce, aioli, beefsteak tomato and arugula on a pretzel bun.
